MSc Maternal and Child Health: Socio-Cultural Perspectives

The course has been developed by the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences, a joint partnership between Kingston University and St George's , University of London . Teaching will be delivered at our St George's campus, Tooting, London . It is ideal for children's nurses, health visitors, midwives and other practitioners working within maternity and children's services. Other practitioners working in health and social care might also find the course content of interest, choosing elements applicable to their area of work.

MSc Maternal and Child Health course content and structure

The focus of the course includes global concerns about determinants of maternal and child health, alongside exploration of the impact of government policies on the provision of care. In addition, it enables practitioners to enhance their critical and analytical skills through application of theories and concepts underpinning relevant areas of practice.

Key aspects of study include:

The overall aim of this postgraduate course is to enable midwives, nurses and other professionals nationally and internationally to explore issues surrounding the health and social care of women, children and young people, while considering their own unique role in service improvement. It also provides participants with the opportunity to research, in depth, a specific area of maternal and child health related provision / care through the masters level dissertation.

Assessment

Essays, examination, reflective writing and portfolio development, presentations, research dissertation (MSc only).

Core modules

All students will undertake the following interprofessional modules:

Option modules

Students can choose four of these option modules depending on their interest or their specialist area of practice eg child health, women's health, midwifery:

Duration and attendance

Full-time: one year, two days per week.

Part-time : two years, one day per week.

Entry requirements

An honours degree and a relevant professional qualification, plus a minimum of two years' experience in health and social care. For those who do not hold a first degree, evidence of appropriate other study and / or experience will be considered.

Costs

£5,253 (Home/EU students) £8,930.50 (International students).
